Why Frenkie de Jong should be targeted by both Arsenal and Man United

Why Arsenal & Manchester United should consider targeting Dutch star Frenkie de Jong

Uncertain future in Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong

Dutch star Frenkie de Jong may have his world turned upside down after Barcelona has not ruled out the sale of the Ajax Amsterdam product as the Xavi regime turns its wheels in a unified direction on and off the pitch.

Per existing reports, Barcelona’s interest in Manchester City centre-back Aymeric Laporte could give birth to a potential swap deal sending De Jong to the Etihad Stadium with Laporte returning to Spain in the other direction.

Barcelona is rumoured to have put De Jong in the shop window as early as November after the club viewed him as a potential source for a serious cash injection into the coffers in Catalunya.

According to The Athletic, some inside the club’s hierarchy are hopeful of a big sale involving De Jong with a possibility of cash-injected Newcastle tabling a bid for the Dutch international;

Some around the club would also seriously consider a big offer for Frenkie de Jong, with teenagers Pedri, Gavi and Nico all needing space to develop in midfield. The hope around the Nou Camp remains that Newcastle United, or a similar club with loads of money that are keen to spend, will help them out”

But two other Premier League clubs could – and should – look to hijack any interest from the Magpies in favor of a more notable destination; Arsenal, and Manchester United.

Dutch star the ideal long-term replacement for Granit Xhaka

Frenkie de Jong remains one of the most gifted young midfielders in Europe regardless of whichever bookend is applied to his tenure with Barcelona, and his profile would suit Arsenal to the ground.

Many would automatically rule the Gunners out regarding the fee it would likely require to secure his services given Barça are hopeful of making a profit on the ~£72million they spent on him just two summers ago, as well as Arsenal remaining in the hunt for a long-term option at centre-forward.

But if Mikel Arteta’s young guns were to add De Jong among its ranks, it would offer an immediate upgrade both currently and in the future over key central figure Granit Xhaka.

Why Arsenal & Manchester United should consider targeting Dutch star Frenkie de Jong

Xhaka continues to be an influential figure for Arsenal both on and off the pitch under Arteta, but there are no guarantees that the Swiss international will not once again seek a move away from north London in the summer as he did just a few months ago.

De Jong is highly capable as both a holding midfielder as he is in a double-pivot in a two-man midfield, but his technical quality, effectiveness at controlling the ebb and flow of possession, and creativity from deeper areas would make him an ideal candidate to pick up the midfield mantle from Xhaka.

Van De Beek reunion at Man United

Regardless of their own issues this season, Manchester United remains one of the gargantuan of football; not just in England and Europe, but globally as well.

The Red Devils are hardly shy about splashing the cash to bring in the biggest available names at any given moment, and De Jong would certainly fit that bill not just in reputation but also validity regarding the ongoing project at Old Trafford.

In desperate need of an upgrade in quality in the centre of the park as well as the notion that star man Paul Pogba is always just three inches away from an exit, De Jong would certainly bring much of the missing technical and creative quality lacking at United despite the arrival of Ralf Rangnick this winter.

More importantly, potentially, would be the pull of former clubmate Donny van de Beek who is still on United’s books; though no one knows exactly for how long that reality could remain.

The pair of Dutch internationals shone together for Ajax and played vital roles in the club’s run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2018-19 as part of a three-man midfield that also featured Danish international Lasse Schöne.

Their bond on the pitch has continued at international level in service of their country as well, and though Van de Beek has hardly had the time of his life in the northwest of England, securing De Jong could not only give United a brilliant player added to their ranks, but an avenue to perhaps get the very best out of a player in Van de Beek who is gifted in his own right.

Watford complete first signing under new manager Roy Hodgson

Watford have completed their fourth signing of the January transfer window, and their first under new manager Roy Hodgson, who was announced as taking over from Claudio Ranieri on Tuesday.

This comes in the shape of Bourdeaux winger Samuel Kalu, who has joined the Hornets on a deal until 2025 for an undisclosed fee.

The Nigerian winger follows Hassane Kamara in making the move from Ligue 1 to Watford this January, while the club have also added Samir and Eyo Kayembe to their ranks in a busy January window that has been overseen by those in the club hierarchy.

A Watford statement read:

‘Watford FC is delighted to announce the signing of Nigerian international winger Samuel Kalu on a deal until June 2025 from French club FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

The fourth new signing of the January window, Kalu joins full-back Hassane Kamara, central defender Samir and midfielder Edo Kayembe at Vicarage Road.

The 24-year-old signs for the Hornets following three-and-a-half successful years in France’s top tier, where he scored nine goals.

Capable of playing on either flank, Kalu is a versatile option in a competitive squad, typically operating on the right wing.

The quick-footed attacker first played for Slovakian side AS Trenčín after moving to Europe from his native Nigeria, and earned a switch to Belgian giants KAA Gent in 2017 following impressive performances. He then joined Bordeaux in August 2018, where he has since made 86 appearances for Les Girondins.’

What next for Watford?

Watford still face a race to stay in the top flight, currently sitting in the relegation zone and set to compete with newly minted Newcastle United to avoid the drop.

Onto their third manager of the season already, it needs to be a case of third time lucky to prevent them slipping into the Championship.

Newcastle offer second bid of 20 million euros for full-back as Armando Broja bid mooted

Newcastle continue to throw money around as they look to add late additions to their squad in an attempt to stave off the drop from the Premier League.

Now, according to reports coming out of France, they are looking to double down on the agreement reached with Bruno Guimaraes by offering 20 million euros for Bayer Leverkusen left-back Mitchell Bakker.

This comes courtesy of French outlet L’Equipe, who claim that a bid was sent on Monday, and that representatives are already in Newcastle trying to make a deal happen.

Should that deal and the move for Guimaraes take shape, it could take Newcastle’s spending to over the 80 million mark, across 4 additions.

It may not end there, however.

Bid for Armando Broja mooted

In their bid to balance experienced additions with “value for money”, more youthful options. One of those, according to reports in Italy, is Chelsea loanee Armando Broja. The Albanian forward has impressed during his stint at Southampton so far this season, scoring 5 times in 18 Premier League outings thus far.

And, according to Fabrizio Romano, Southampton are ready to launch a 25 million pound bid for his services.

However, as per TuttoMercato, they will be outbid by the newly-wealthy Newcastle United, with the Magpies ready to table a bid worth 40 million euros (33.3 million pounds) this window, in the hope of stealing a march on other potential suitors.

As of right now, however, Chelsea remain unsure as to whether he will be allowed to depart Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Arsenal line up two new targets after Vlahovic and Guimaraes let-down

Arsenal have been dealt a double blow in the past 48 hours, as first Juventus swooped for Dusan Vlahovic, and then Newcastle made a move for Bruno Guimaraes, both of whom were thought to be targets for this January.

And, with Arsenal seemingly in need of both a midfielder and a striker, it is safe to say the news has not gone down too well with the Gunners faithful. And now, with speculation ramping up, two more players have been linked with moves to the Emirates that fit the bill.

First on the list is Victor Osimhen, Napoli’s star forward.

Italian reports suggest that the Gunners would be interested in the Nigerian, who has netted 9 times in 16 games this season, but it is unclear whether a late move would be possible.

They are not the only club interested in the Naples man either, with other English clubs and a club in Spain all also circling.

But, given that Napoli brought him to Italy from Lille for over 70 million euros, he wont come cheap.

Douglas Luiz on the cards?

Another man linked with a move to north London is Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, who is seemingly out of favour under Steven Gerrard.

The 23 year old Brazilian has worked with Mikel Arteta before at Manchester City, and offers the left-footed option that the Spaniard craves.

And, with 18 months left on his current contract at Villa Park, he has not been offered another, while the Villains remain keen on Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus, who plays the same position.

It could entice the Gunners into a late swoop.
