Dynamo hire former MLS Cup champion Paulo Nagamura as new head coach

The Houston Dynamo hired two-time MLS Cup champion Paulo Nagamura as head coach, the club announced Monday. Nagamura, who won MLS titles as a player with the Los Angeles Galaxy and Sporting Kansas City, spent the past four seasons as coach of Sporting Kansas City II, Sporting Kansas City’s reserve side with a focus on youth development.

The 38-year-old Nagamura, who will be the second-youngest active head coach in the MLS, replaces Tab Ramos, who was let go after the Dynamo finished last in the MLS’s Western Conference.

“This is a magnificent opportunity,” Nagamura said in a statement released by the team. “Ownership and club leadership are committed to building a team that will truly make our fans proud. I am thankful that (owner) Ted Segal, (vice chairman) Lyle Ayes, (president) John Walker and (general manager) Pat Onstad entrusted me with this role at a turning point for the club. As a player, I watched Pat and previous Dynamo teams lift MLS Cups, win conference championships and I understand the responsibility that comes with this role. That is the bar, and I will work tirelessly to help the Dynamo return to the top tier of MLS.”

Nagamura played 12 seasons in the MLS after coming up through the São Paulo FC academy in his native Brazil. The midfielder played his first two seasons with the Galaxy where he won his first title before going on to play for Toronto FC and Chivas USA. He had another stint with the Galaxy before playing the final five seasons of his career in Kansas City.

“Paulo was known as a fierce competitor during his playing days and that competitiveness has carried over into his coaching career,” Segal said. “He is a talented, high-potential coach who we believe will relate well to our players and help instill the type of culture we are working to create.”

The Dynamo open preseason training on Jan. 18 in preparation of their regular season opener on Feb. 27.
