Chelsea News: The Blues are eyeing Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana as they look to replace Antonio Rudiger

Chelsea News: The Blues are having trouble tying down Antonio Rudiger with a new contract. Hence Chelsea is now reportedly considering raiding Leicester City for Wesley Fofana.

Antonio Rudiger’s contract with Chelsea will expire at the end of the 2021/22 season. The German defender is ready to extend his contract but is asking the club to double his current salary.

Rudiger has demanded a weekly salary of about £225,000 as per reports. But the Blues are looking to offer the German a salary of £150,000-per-week. Hence there is a good chance that Antonio Rudiger could be leaving Chelsea as a free agent at the end of the season.

The Blues have other problems in their defense as well. Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta will also be out of contracts at the end of the season. But Chelsea is yet to finalize new deals with any of the mentioned players.

As per The Hard Tackle, The Blues are looking at possible replacements for Antonio Rudiger. Hence, they have shortlisted Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana as a possible option.

Thomas Tuchel has reportedly been impressed by Wesley Fofana’s performances in recent seasons. Owing to this, the German has included him in his two-man shortlist that also includes Jules Kounde.

The centre-back played a key part in the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Leicester City last season. Fofana played the entire 90 minutes as the Foxes beat the Blues and secured the first FA Cup title in their history.

But the Leicester City defender has been very unlucky with injury. Wesley Fofana broke his leg in a preseason game last summer and has not played since. But even then, Thomas Tuchel would love to bring the player to Chelsea in the summer.

The 21-year old Frenchman is a product of St. Etienne’s academy. He played a season with the French club before joining Leicester City in October 2020. With the Foxes, Wesley Fofana has made 38 appearances as of now.

Without Fofana, Leicester City has struggled for form this season. The defensive pairing of Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu has been error-prone. Owing to this, the Foxes find themselves in 12th position.

As stated earlier, Antonio Rudiger is expected to leave at the end of the season. Real Madrid has emerged as the favourites to sign the German. But their initial salary offer of €175,000-per-week has been rejected by the centre-back.

Other European giants have also taken note of Rudiger’s prowess. Hence Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are also looking to capitalize on the German if he decides to leave Chelsea in the summer. It has to be seen what Rudiger decides to do at the end of the season.

Chelsea Transfer News: The Blues have lost out on Antonio Rudiger as per reports. The German defender has agreed on a deal worth €400,000-per-week with Real Madrid.

Following the UK government’s sanctions, the Blues have been unable to conduct any “financial” talks with their players. Hence, Thomas Tuchel has suffered his first major blow before the summer transfer window has even officially begun.

Chelsea were reportedly in talks for a contract extension with Antonio Rudiger. The German defender was ready to extend his contract but wanted a significant pay rise.

However, the negotiations had to be halted as Chelsea were termed a “frozen asset” of Roman Abramovich. The Blues still can’t conduct any transfer business and they would have to wait until Todd Boehly becomes the “official” owner of the club.

Thomas Tuchel had earlier clarified that the 29-year-old defender would quite possibly leave the club at the end of the season. The Chelsea boss blamed the sanctions for the departure of Rudiger.

As per Thomas Tuchel, Antonio Rudiger wanted to stay at Chelsea. But the defender did not want to wait 1-2 months for the new owner to come in and give him an offer. Hence, the German defender decided to explore other horizons.

Barcelona, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus were also close on the heels of Antonio Rudiger. His agent talked to all of the mentioned clubs. But the 29-year-old eventually chose to move to Real Madrid after considerations.

Thomas Tuchel would now be tasked to improve Chelsea’s backline. But the German manager could have more trouble brewing in front of him as Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta could also be leaving the club on a free transfer in the summer.

Johnson Tips Chelsea To Sign Wesley Fofana

Chelsea Transfer News: Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson believes the Blues should sign Leicester City center-back Wesley Fofana.

Following news that Antonio Rudiger is poised to leave West London when his contract ends in the summer, center-back is a position of need for Chelsea. Rudiger has reportedly agreed to join Real Madrid on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Jules Kounde of Sevilla was a Chelsea target last summer and is believed to be on Tuchel’s radar again. However, Johnson believes Fofana would be a better fit. Since his £36.5 million move to the East Midlands in September 2020, Fofana has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best center-backs.

Fofana recently recovered from an ankle injury he suffered against Villarreal in August. The Foxes have only conceded five goals in the five matches in which he has played.

Chelsea Transfer News: What Did Glen Johnson Say About Wesley Fofana?

Rudiger and Christensen are both expected to leave Chelsea this summer. This will cause a big void to be left to fill at the heart of the defense. Also, they will not receive any sum from other clubs for signing their center-backs.

Johnson has called Wesley Fofana the ‘New Raphael Varane’. He has also tipped the club to sign the Leicester center-back to replace Antonio Rudiger.

As reported by the Express, He said: “Yeah, I love him to be honest, He’s amazing, in my opinion. He reminds me of Raphael Varane in terms of speed, ball control, and strength.”

“Wesley Fofana, I believe, would be an excellent substitute for Antonio Rudiger at Chelsea. He wasn’t even on the France team until recently, which astounded me because he was great. I really like him.”

The Foxes do not want or need to sell Fofana and signed him to a new five-year contract in March upon his return from injury. This means that Leicester will demand a monstrous fee from Chelsea.

Leicester are known for asking big some for players as they did with Harry Maguire and Riyad Mahrez. It would be no secret that current financial strains put the move at risk for Chelsea.

Another play that could come at a higher price as well but with fewer negotiations is Jules Kounde. The French center-back was ready to join the Blues but the club was unable to meet Sevilla’s asking price.

This time too they will not budge on their £80m valuations for Kounde. It seems that Chelsea will need to pay big to bring either of the center-back to Stamford Bridge.

Opinion: Chelsea to be forced into squad revamp

Published

It looks like that due to a mix of the current ownership takeover situation and a number of contracts running out at the club, Chelsea are being forced into a squad revamp this summer and this is an immediate huge task for the new owners.

A squad revamp is a good thing if you ask me, and it is needed. But the task ahead is so big that it is seemingly near impossible to really do it over one summer, especially as brand-new owners just arriving.

But just look at where we are right now. Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger are definitely leaving as free agents this summer. Cesar Azpilicueta could still join them by leaving and even if he doesn’t, then he’s only got a year left on his deal. Jorginho and N’Golo Kante only have a year left on their deals and could well be sold just so they don’t go for free.

Then you have an unhappy Romelu Lukaku who could go this summer, and a number of other attackers such as Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic, who are bound to also be unhappy with bench roles and could also ask to leave as a result. Marcos Alonso is also rumoured to be off this summer, and others as well.

But how many do Chelsea let leave? Do they really want to keep any players in the squad who do not want to be there moving forward? Because I know I wouldn’t. But selling all of those players and then replacing them in one summer, is going to be near impossible and a massive task. But I also think it needs to happen. Chelsea near to clear some deadwood and start a new era under the new owners.

Whether it needs to happen right away or over a few transfer windows though is up for debate, but whatever they decide to do, the new owners have a mountain to climb as soon as they arrive through the doors.
