3 things we learned as Chelsea overcome dismal Spurs side in VAR dominated clash

New left back no longer needed? 3 things we learned as Chelsea overcome dismal Spurs side in VAR dominated clash

Chelsea advance to Wembley

It was always going to be an unhill struggle for Tottenham to get any foothold back in the Carabao Cup tie, after suffering a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, and so it proved as Chelsea marched on to Wembley, albeit in slightly less comfortable fashion than the first leg may have suggested.

Tottenham were better second time around. In truth, it was hard for them not to be, but VAR was forced to come to Chelsea’s rescue on three occasions (though correctly) as Antonio Conte’s side showed more fight in front of their own fans.

The result, however, was never in doubt.

Chelsea added a third to their tally early in the first half thanks to an Antonio Rudiger goal, bundling in from a corner. And from there, while it was relatively even on the pitch, Tottenham could never get a foothold in the scoreline as they looked for a remarkable comeback.

The result means that Chelsea will now face one of Arsenal or Liverpool in the final of the competition, with the pair of clubs set to do battle on Thursday night.

But it remained a night of learning for both managers, and 101 takes a look at three things we learnt from the encounter.

1. Have Chelsea found their left-back replacement?

All the recent attention has been on Chelsea’s search for a fullback in the transfer market following the season-ending injury to Ben Chilwell

And while they may still look to bring Emerson back from his loan at Lyon, Malang Sarr proved that he was more than capable in the position should Tuchel opt for a back 4, as he did for both legs in this tie.

The defender, traditionally a centre-back, did himself no disservice either as an orthodox left back or, when Marcos Alonso entered the fray, on the left side of a back three.

And with so many defensive issues potentially facing Chelsea this season, and the futures of Rudiger and Andreas Christensen both in the air, Sarr may yet prove a brilliant addition to the squad.

2. VAR prevents farce

VAR was, for once, the hero of the evening, as it prevented a pair of farcical penalties being awarded to the home side.

With Chelsea 1-0 up and cruising, a challenge from Rudiger on the edge of the area saw Andre Marriner point to the spot, only for VAR to correctly show that the foul was a couple of yards outside the area.

Then, ten minutes into the second half, it was forced to intervene again after a perfect challenge from Kepa on Lucas Moura was deemed a penalty on field.

Without the technology, so often criticised (justifiably), it could have been a very different tie. As it was, Chelsea got the result they deserved.

3. Tottenham need investment

To compete with the big boys, Tottenham need investment.

More than that, they need investment in the right ares- it is difficult to think of a single transfer since that of Heung Min-Son that has been a success, and while the combined 100 million for Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy N’Dombele sometimes go under the radar, they are symptomatic of the major problem at the club. The money is spent in the wrong places.

Now, with reportedly little to spend in January, they cannot afford to skimp or get it wrong. Antonio Conte’s team selection showed this, with a lack of creativity from central midfield, a right back playing at left-wing-back, and no recognised striker to partner Harry Kane.

And with Conte’s notoriously short fuse if he feels that the club isn’t backing him, there could yet be fireworks if Daniel Levy doesn’t pull his chequebook out.

Watford complete first signing under new manager Roy Hodgson

Watford have completed their fourth signing of the January transfer window, and their first under new manager Roy Hodgson, who was announced as taking over from Claudio Ranieri on Tuesday.

This comes in the shape of Bourdeaux winger Samuel Kalu, who has joined the Hornets on a deal until 2025 for an undisclosed fee.

The Nigerian winger follows Hassane Kamara in making the move from Ligue 1 to Watford this January, while the club have also added Samir and Eyo Kayembe to their ranks in a busy January window that has been overseen by those in the club hierarchy.

A Watford statement read:

‘Watford FC is delighted to announce the signing of Nigerian international winger Samuel Kalu on a deal until June 2025 from French club FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

The fourth new signing of the January window, Kalu joins full-back Hassane Kamara, central defender Samir and midfielder Edo Kayembe at Vicarage Road.

The 24-year-old signs for the Hornets following three-and-a-half successful years in France’s top tier, where he scored nine goals.

Capable of playing on either flank, Kalu is a versatile option in a competitive squad, typically operating on the right wing.

The quick-footed attacker first played for Slovakian side AS Trenčín after moving to Europe from his native Nigeria, and earned a switch to Belgian giants KAA Gent in 2017 following impressive performances. He then joined Bordeaux in August 2018, where he has since made 86 appearances for Les Girondins.’

What next for Watford?

Watford still face a race to stay in the top flight, currently sitting in the relegation zone and set to compete with newly minted Newcastle United to avoid the drop.

Onto their third manager of the season already, it needs to be a case of third time lucky to prevent them slipping into the Championship.

Newcastle offer second bid of 20 million euros for full-back as Armando Broja bid mooted

Newcastle continue to throw money around as they look to add late additions to their squad in an attempt to stave off the drop from the Premier League.

Now, according to reports coming out of France, they are looking to double down on the agreement reached with Bruno Guimaraes by offering 20 million euros for Bayer Leverkusen left-back Mitchell Bakker.

This comes courtesy of French outlet L’Equipe, who claim that a bid was sent on Monday, and that representatives are already in Newcastle trying to make a deal happen.

Should that deal and the move for Guimaraes take shape, it could take Newcastle’s spending to over the 80 million mark, across 4 additions.

It may not end there, however.

Bid for Armando Broja mooted

In their bid to balance experienced additions with “value for money”, more youthful options. One of those, according to reports in Italy, is Chelsea loanee Armando Broja. The Albanian forward has impressed during his stint at Southampton so far this season, scoring 5 times in 18 Premier League outings thus far.

And, according to Fabrizio Romano, Southampton are ready to launch a 25 million pound bid for his services.

However, as per TuttoMercato, they will be outbid by the newly-wealthy Newcastle United, with the Magpies ready to table a bid worth 40 million euros (33.3 million pounds) this window, in the hope of stealing a march on other potential suitors.

As of right now, however, Chelsea remain unsure as to whether he will be allowed to depart Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Arsenal line up two new targets after Vlahovic and Guimaraes let-down

Arsenal have been dealt a double blow in the past 48 hours, as first Juventus swooped for Dusan Vlahovic, and then Newcastle made a move for Bruno Guimaraes, both of whom were thought to be targets for this January.

And, with Arsenal seemingly in need of both a midfielder and a striker, it is safe to say the news has not gone down too well with the Gunners faithful. And now, with speculation ramping up, two more players have been linked with moves to the Emirates that fit the bill.

First on the list is Victor Osimhen, Napoli’s star forward.

Italian reports suggest that the Gunners would be interested in the Nigerian, who has netted 9 times in 16 games this season, but it is unclear whether a late move would be possible.

They are not the only club interested in the Naples man either, with other English clubs and a club in Spain all also circling.

But, given that Napoli brought him to Italy from Lille for over 70 million euros, he wont come cheap.

Douglas Luiz on the cards?

Another man linked with a move to north London is Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, who is seemingly out of favour under Steven Gerrard.

The 23 year old Brazilian has worked with Mikel Arteta before at Manchester City, and offers the left-footed option that the Spaniard craves.

And, with 18 months left on his current contract at Villa Park, he has not been offered another, while the Villains remain keen on Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus, who plays the same position.

It could entice the Gunners into a late swoop.
