Thomas Tuchel’s latest tweaks show he’s as frustrated by wing-back weaknesses as we are

Published

Chelsea’s team for this afternoon’s derby game against Tottenham sees Thomas Tuchel change his formation once again.

Injuries and rotation have meant we’ve seen more variety in the last week weeks than we did in the first 11 months of Tuchel’s time at Chelsea, and the more that he has to see Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso trying to fill in at wing back, the more he seems to be trying to find solutions that avoid that necessity entirely.

Today it looks like Malang Sarr at left back, with Azpi on the right. Both are comfortable slotting in to a back 3, it could be lopsided either way, with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech providing the attacking width for the team – but also capable of dropping back to protect their full backs.

Effectively this system sees a centre back replaced by an extra midfield player, and it will be interesting to see whether Mason Mount is playing as part of a midfield 3 with Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic, or whether we see him pushed up right alongside Romelu Lukaku.

Either way, the change of shape could well catch Tottenham out, if all goes to plan.

Chelsea expected to act fast this summer – Talk Chelsea

As Blues fans, we have an ongoing joke every single transfer window. We always wait and watch clubs around us getting deals done early, whilst we are content in knowing that we will likely be there in the final hours of the window trying to get deals over the line on time.

Well, if the latest article via The Evening Standard is anything to go by, that is all about the change under Todd Boehly.

The American is now just an official announcement from Chelsea away from fully being in charge of the club and getting the sanctions lifted. And that means getting down to business this summer.

The report claims that Boehly will personally oversee Chelsea’s transfer drive this summer after agreeing with Thomas Tuchel that a rebuild is needed to return them to the top.

And as I said above, it also seems like we can also get excited about getting deals done early, as it sounds like Boehly is not going to hang around when we are finally allowed to do deals again.

Boehly has made it clear he wants Chelsea to be in immediate contention for the Premier League title, and is prepared to give Tuchel all the backing he needs to make that happen. And that means taking action in the market and getting deals over the line early, so we do not end up having a last-minute panic like we always seem to do at this club.

Hopefully, new owners bring new ways of operating and make us more cut-throat, which this article ma

Chelsea fans have many reasons to be excited for new era – Talk Chelsea

Today has been a great day for Blues fans so far and it is just an official club announcement away from being one of their best days for a while.

Todd Boehly’s consortium have been passed by the UK Government as the new owners of Chelsea Football Club. All that is left now is the official announcement from the club, and I genuinely feel that this might feature a video or at least some words from Boehly himself. And that is reason one for Blues fans to get excited – Boehly and his group will be a lot more open and willing to communicate with fans a lot more, which none of us have been used to at all under the Roman Abramovich era.

The second main reason is that they are reportedly going to be putting power and trust in Thomas Tuchel and rate him highly as a manager. As The Telegraph report today, Chelsea’s new owners will allow Tuchel to rebuild the squad in his own identity – just as Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp have done.

This is excellent news, and means Tuchel will not only be backed, but he will be given time to rebuild this Chelsea squad and do it how he wants to. Only then, after a few years down the line when he has HIS squad together, can he truly be judged.

The third main reason is that these new owners are coming in with huge ambition and a clear plan to get Chelsea challenging for Premier League titles again, and they have the funds to back that. We are already reading various reports about the big budget they are prepared to spend on new signings this summer, and it looks like it’s going to be a very busy one for the club.

Finally, Boehly and his team are absolute experts in running sports team and have proven it for some time. They know what they’re doing, and they know what to do to make Chelsea a success.

Now, there are MANY more reasons I could add to this article, but I think that is enough excitement for one day!

Chelsea fans vote on next captain to replace Cesar Azpilicueta – Talk Chelsea

Not only do we have a summer squad rebuild to start under new ownership, we also have a pretty big decision to make sure we get right for the future of the club.

If Cesar Azpilicueta leaves as is what is expected this summer, then the club needs a new permanent captain. Naturally, Jorginho takes the reigns being vice already, and if he stays, that is what I’d expect to happen and then one of the below players step up as the new vice. So, I included Jorginho in the poll today for that reason, but there is every chance that he still leaves this summer.

I wanted to gauge opinion from Blues fans so I asked who they would like to see become the next club captain on a permanent basis after Azpilicueta, and the answers were largely quite clear.

Thiago Silva was the most popular selection with 43% of the votes. Next up was Reece James with 24% of the votes, followed by Jorginho and Mason Mount, who both got 17% of the votes. These votes were out of 10,000 plus voters, so it’s a good indication of what Blues fans want to see.

It would be Thiago Silva for me for the next one or two seasons if Jorginho leaves, and I’d select Mason Mount or Reece James as vice-captain for now. I cannot choose between the two, but I’d make one of them vice until Silva leaves just to get the captaincy experience without the real pressure of being the club captain. I think this would be a nice and natural progression.
