“Still in play,” said TFC president Bill Manning, when asked about potential player transactions that have been heating up on social media the last few days.

For months, various media sources, including the Toronto Sun, have reported that Designated Players Jozy Altidore and Yeferson Soteldo are on their way out. It’s expected that Altidore, the club’s second all-time leading scorer, will be bought out and Soteldo dealt back to a South American club. With Italian international Lorenzo Insigne joining TFC to play on July 1, the club has to get rid of at least one of its current DP’s. It’s almost certain that Manning, still smarting over the club’s poor 2021 season, is going to sign another big-time DP player, meaning that two current DP’s on the team will have to go. Each MLS club is allowed three DP’s. Alejandro Pozuelo, Toronto’s third DP, is likely not going anywhere, despite a disappointing season last year.

Toronto players will be arriving at the BMO Training Ground on Sunday for medicals and the club will depart for the first part of MLS pre-season camp in Irvine, Calif., on Tuesday. Players and staff will return to Toronto for a couple of days in early February and then head down to Austin, Texas, for the second part of pre-season camp before opening the MLS regular season on Feb. 26 at Toyota Stadium against FC Dallas. The Reds’ home opener is March 5 at BMO Field against the New York Red Bulls. Management is hoping to get in a couple friendlies before the regular season starts. One match is already scheduled for Jan. 29 against the L.A. Galaxy, somewhere in southern California.

REDS EYEING SALCEDO

According to the soccer website TUDN, Carlos Salcedo is very close to being signed by Toronto FC. The 28 year-old centre back, who plays for Liga MX club Tigres UANL and the Mexico national team, reportedly has an significant offer on the table from TFC, and the ball at this point is in the Tigres’ corner.

The Reds need to shore up on their backline, having let veterans Omar Gonzalez and Eriq Zavaleta walk following the 2021 season while veteran defender Justin Morrow retired at the end of the 2021 campaign. TFC signed free agent and MLS veteran Shane O’Neill last month but need even more veteran help to play alongside O’Neill, Chris Mavinga and Kemar Lawrence.

INSIGNE INJURY MINOR

Napoli confirmed that Insigne, who signed a major, four-year contract with TFC last weekend — four years in the neighborhood of $45 million — has suffered a ‘minor muscle injury’. Insigne came down with the injury against Sampdoria last Sunday. Napoli reported that he has already begun treatment.

CHAPMAN SCOTLAND-BOUND

Former TFC midfielder Jay Chapman has signed with Dundee FC of the Scottish Premiership. The 28-year-old Brampton native has three caps playing for Canada.
