Spurs linked with AS Roma’s Ebrima Darboe

Tottenham Hotspur Transfer News: Ebrima Darboe broke into AS Roma’s starting XI under Paulo Fonseca last season.

He has caught the attention of scouts across Europe in six league appearances he has made for the Rome-based club thus far. His exploits drove praise from Gambia’s head coach, Tom Saintfiet, who handed him his first international cap against Niger in June last year. He has represented his country six times since then.

Tottenham Hotspur Transfer News: Antonio Conte wants to sign Ebrima Darboe

According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur are showing interest in signing AS Roma defensive midfielder Ebrima Darboe. The London-based are monitoring his progress since the arrival of Antonio Conte.

He has reportedly identified central midfield as one of the key areas to strengthen this window. Apart from Darboe, the Spurs have also shown interest in signing Franck Kessie and Weston McKennie recently.

What will Ebrima Darboe bring to Tottenham?

Darboe is a powerful player who plays his best football when deployed as a defensive midfielder. His key strengths are his passing and positional awareness, while also being an accomplished tackler. He averaged 1 tackle, 1.6 interceptions and 1.4 dribbles per game in 5 appearances in Serie A last season.

Apart from that, he also registered a passing accuracy of 93.6 in the Italian top division last term.

Antonio Conte meeting with Spurs board over January transfer plans

Conte recently held a meeting with Tottenham Hotspur’s board over January transfer plans. The former Chelsea manager has met with chairman Daniel Levy (chairman) and Fabio Paratici (Director of Football) to give his assessment of the squad.

Speaking ahead of Spurs EFL Cup game against Chelsea, Conte said: “I spoke with the club and I had my thoughts about the situation and this is the most important thing. Then the club has to decide the best way to go. I don’t have expectations. I am a coach and I know that we have to solve many problems. For me, the most important thing was to speak to the club. I did this and now the club has to decide what we have to do.

It was Conte’s first meeting with the Spurs board over transfer plans. He believed to have the full support of the club’s board in the transfer market.

What’s next?

Tottenham are currently sixth in the English Premier League table with 33 points from 18 games. They registered a 3-1 victory against Morecambe on Sunday. Antonio Conte will now lead his side against Chelsea in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals during the midweek. His troops will have the massive task of overturning the Blues’ 2-0 lead from the first leg.

Meanwhile, AS Roma are placed sixth in the Serie A table, 17 points behind leaders Inter Milan. They will next play Leece in the Coppa Italia before tussling against Empoli in the league on January 23.

Antonio Conte surprised by incredible referee call against Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur News: Antonio Conte suffered his first defeat in the Premier League as a Spurs manager. Chelsea ran out 2-0 winners to bring an end to his 9 matches unbeaten streak.

The Blues scored twice in quick succession in the second half through Hakim Ziyech and Thiago Silva, to grab all 3 points. Conte was left frustrated with one of the referee’s decisions, as Harry Kane’s first-half goal was chalked off.

Kane seemed to have put his side ahead right before half-time, but Paul Tierney ruled it out. The referee deemed that Kane had fouled Thiago Silva in the buildup to the goal, for minimal contact on the part of the English striker.

The Italian manager did not understand the decision from the referee and questioned it after the match. He did not get how the goal was ruled out, especially in England, given the physical nature of the Premier League.

“In the first half the referee disallowed a goal, I was very clear with him in a polite way, but to see this type of goal disallowed in England was incredible,” Conte said. “Maybe in Italy, it was 50-50, but in England it was incredible.

The decision to chalk off the goal became a very big point of debate during the match. A goal for Spurs at that time could potentially have turned the tide of the match.

Several football pundits also seemed a bit bemused at how the goal was ruled out for a slight shove in the back on Thiago Silva. The decision also surprised Chelsea coach, Thomas Tuchel, who later on said that he thought the goal should have stood.

Tottenham Hotspur News: Antonio Conte was happy with his side’s performance

Antonio Conte was also critical of Paul Tierney’s decision to award Tanganga a yellow card in the first half. Tanganga received a booking for what looked like a soft challenge on Hudson Odoi, which seemingly meant he needed to tread with care for the rest of the match.

“What also hurt me a lot was the yellow card to (Japhet) Tanganga. It can seem a stupid thing but the yellow card changed the game for him. It also meant we had to substitute him. The referee tried to make the best decision. It could be good or bad.”

Despite the refereeing decisions, Chelsea were evidently the better team on the park and the difference in class between the two sides showed yet again. This was a third consecutive defeat for Tottenham Hotspur against Chelsea this month.

Although the good work seems to have started under Conte, he desperately needs signings in January. It is the only way they will become serious contenders for the Top-4 this season.

Tottenham Hotspur are currently seventh in the league with 36 points from 20 matches. Spurs remain 2 points behind Manchester United but have 2 games in hand. Antonio Conte now has a couple of weeks in hand as Spurs next take on Brighton on the 4th of February in the FA Cup.

Chelsea News: Thomas Tuchel hopes to control his emotions while facing Antonio Conte

Chelsea News: Thomas Tuchel has urged himself to keep his cool while guiding his side from the sidelines. The Chelsea boss let emotions take the better of him during their previous fixture against Brighton.

Tuchel was quite frustrated and angry at several decisions from the referee as Chelsea dropped points yet again in the league. A 1-1 draw against Brighton left them 13 points off Manchester City at the top.

With yet another big fixture coming up against London rivals, Tuchel hopes he is at his best as he looks to guide them to a victory. Tuchel knows it will be difficult to control his emotions in a game of this magnitude but is confident of reigning in his emotions as much as possible.

Thomas Tuchel said, “It doesn’t affect my coaching. You always need to find a good mix between emotions and a cool head, and this is on me like it is for the players.”

“You need to know about the importance of the game. We know what it means to the supporters, to know what it means at the league table, but you cannot get carried away by your emotions.”

“For example on Tuesday at Brighton, we were too much involved in our emotions, like frustration, anger or disappointment. When you play a derby against Tottenham or against an emotional guy like Conte, we cannot play from pure emotions.”

Chelsea News: Thomas Tuchel backed Romelu Lukaku to find his goal-scoring touch very soon

Thomas Tuchel and Lukaku

The German boss also hailed Antonio Conte for the work he has done ever since joining Tottenham. Claiming himself to be a huge fan of Conte, he recognised the dangers Tottenham possess as a team.

Tuchel considered himself very lucky to come up against the genius that is Antonio Conte. Despite coming up on top previously, he knows he needs to focus yet again to get the same result for the third time running.

Thomas Tuchel was also supportive of his struggling striker, Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian striker has not had the best of times this season, with goals hard to come by. Lukaku has only scored 5 goals this season in the league in 15 appearances.

However, Tuchel has backed him to regain his old form very soon. He cited the example of Harry Kane, who struggled to score goals at the beginning of the season. However, Kane looks to have found his mojo back in the recent games, and Tuchel hoped for something similar from his star No.9

Thomas Tuchel faces a must-win game against Spurs if they are to give themselves some chance to have a run at Manchester City. City dropped points against Southampton and a victory for Chelsea would bring down the deficit to 10 points for the time being.

Chelsea have had the edge over Spurs recently. However, it will be a whole new game as far as the German manager is concerned. The Blues won both their fixtures in the Carabao Cup semi-finals to cement their spot in the finals.

Hugo Lloris has had a great impact on Spurs’ successes in the recent past, pulling off incredible saves at the back. However, Lloris is yet to win a title with Tottenham and it’s one aspect he would like to change in these next two years.

Tottenham Hotspur News: Hugo Lloris became the first Spurs goalkeeper to reach 100 clean sheets in the Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur announced the news on Twitter saying, “We are delighted to announce that Hugo Lloris has signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with the club, which will run until 2024.

“Captain of club and country, World Cup and UEFA Nations League winner with France, Hugo, 35, has racked up 395 appearances since his arrival from Lyon in August 2012.

“Already 14th in our all-time appearance list, he will soon become only the 12th player to make 400-plus appearances for us in all competitions. Only two goalkeepers – all-time greats Pat Jennings (590) and Ted Ditchburn (452) – have played more for us.”

Hugo Lloris and Tottenham Hotspur will face a stern test up next when they take on Chelsea in the Premier League this weekend. The Lilywhites have not had great success against Chelsea recently and will want to rectify the record.

Antonio Conte, however, will look to continue the momentum they gained against Leicester. Steven Bergwijn put on a late show to score twice in the final 2 minutes to conjure up a herculean comeback victory.
