Signing free agents might become more frequent for Chelsea this summer – Talk Chelsea

Published

on

Chelsea have been heavily linked to signing Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona today, with various reports now confirming it.

Little plug here, I exclusively reported the story on my website, Si & Dan Talk Chelsea, yesterday. Then there was a further few reports from others such as L’Equipe today confirming my report.

The links have been met with mixed reactions from Chelsea fans, as is always the case. But one thing for sure is that we might need to get used to being linked with signing free agents, and to be honest, I think that’s a good thing.

Dembele could still sign a new contract with his club, but if he doesn’t, getting him for no fee in the summer isn’t a bad idea at all. The only downer would be his high wage demands, which makes this a valid debate.

However, with Chelsea reporting their highest ever financial losses for the year, getting players without having to fork out high fees may well become quite appealing to the club moving forward into the summer transfer window.

We also need to factor in that as it stands, we need to replace three current defenders of our own, with none of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, or Cesar Azpilicueta looking any closer to extending their deals with the club. So we might well need any transfer budget we will have this summer to be invested into our defence.

So then for example, if we want to add any more flair and creativity into our attack as well, we might have to genuinely think about a player such as Dembele if he becomes a free agent. I mean, this is even without mentioning how much Thomas Tuchel likes him and how much he likes Tuchel, having worked together at Dortmund.

But there could be others as well who we might see become genuine Chelsea targets if they become free agents this summer, because it’s not a bad idea at all to add quality to our squad without having to pay a bulk fee to sign them. It may well be a sign of the times right now fresh after a global pandemic.

Chelsea will be just fine financially of course, but yes, it wouldn’t hurt to be searching for a couple of free agents for certain areas when we might need to spend elsewhere this summer.

FC Barcelona Intensify Their Pursuit of Cesar Azpilicueta

Chelsea Transfer News: La Liga giants FC Barcelona have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Blues defender Cesar Azpilicueta. The Spaniard’s current contract with Chelsea is all set to run out this summer.

The Catalan club are willing to sign him for free, as Xavi looks to improve the squad at his disposal. With the 32-year-old defender entering his final 6 months of the contract, Barcelona can start talking directly to the player, and reports confirm they have started doing just that.

FC Barcelona are willing to offer Azpilicueta a 2-year contract till 2024. Xavi is very fond of Azpilicueta’s versatility and is hopeful of solving Barcelona’s defensive woes with his signing. Azpilicueta has not yet informed Chelsea of his intentions, with contract talks currently stalled.

The Spanish international is one of the modern greats of the club, having joined the Blues in 2012 from Marseille. In a distinguished career of over 10 years, Azpilicueta has won it all with the club. He has won 11 trophies at Chelsea, including two Premier League titles in 2014/15 and 2016/17.

Azpilicueta also captained the side to their second-ever Champions League title last summer under Thomas Tuchel. He has a whopping 456 appearances for the club in all competitions and has scored 14 goals in them.

Despite being 32-years of age, his ability to play as both a centre back and a right-back works heavily for him. FC Barcelona are looking at players who would be an upgrade on Sergino Dest, who has failed to live up to the expectations so far.

Reports have also claimed that Barcelona are looking to raid Chelsea for another defender apart from Azpilicueta. The Spanish club are also interested in signing young centre back Andreas Christensen.

The Danish international is another defender who is in his final six months of contract at the club, alongside Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger. He too has yet to finalise his contract talks with the club as talks have come to a standstill in the last couple of months.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel has urged the player to commit his future to the club as soon as possible, but nothing has materialised as of yet. At only 25-years of age, Chelsea do not want to let go of a promising youngster and are desperate to keep him.

“We are waiting for a long time now for confirmation,” said Tuchel. “It is on Andreas to act how he acts on the pitch. He needs to act now off the pitch, and walk the talk because he tells us that he loves Chelsea.”

“He tells us that he wants to stay and be a big part. He is a big part of a big club. I think he is a perfect fit and I think that he is not done yet here.”

Chelsea, however, are looking to finalise both the players’ contractual situations very soon to keep away clubs from two of their star defenders.

Club in Talks With Bayern Munich Star

Chelsea Transfer News: The Blues are in touch with the representatives of Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule to discuss a possible free transfer.

The 26-year-old has apparently made a final decision on his contract position with the Bundesliga winners. He has turned down a contract extension, and his current contract expires in six months.

Niklas Sule Wants a New Challenge

Assuming all other factors remain constant, this opens the door to an enticing opportunity for many European giants. Sule’s list of suitors is long and the German international will be free to choose.

Barcelona has apparently joined the Premier League duo Chelsea and Newcastle United in the group of interested parties. This puts the Magpies in a more difficult position. Though they have the financial means to entice him to England due to the financial takeover, they face relegation and are currently 18th. Just 1 point below Norwich and the safe zone.

Sule has been free to lock down pre-contract arrangements since January 1, so it could come down to who acts first out of the three teams. Bayern had planned to reopen contract talks in February, but Sule wants a new challenge abroad. Hence, he has decided not to renew his contract with the club.

Sule’s representatives have apparently been in contact with Chelsea and Barcelona in particular. Another reason why the move to Newcastle is out of the question, is because the defender wants to play frequently for his country.

Andreas Christensen is one of the candidates to replace Sule at Bayern. His contract with Chelsea ends this season.

Chelsea Transfer News: Christensen’s New Contract Demands

Andreas Christensen is demanding for a new contract in order to continue at Chelsea. He has made a new demand for a substantial wage package to prolong his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, he is garnering a lot of interest from Bayern Munich in this position. The German giants are thought to have met with the defender’s entourage last month to express their interest. The Danish star is still considering the options and is searching for a raise.

The 25-year-old currently receives a pre-tax weekly wage of €100,000 (£84,000), putting him in the lower echelon of the West London club. He wants to quadruple his current salary and earn roughly €10 million (£8.4 million) per year.

Will Chelsea lose both its starting Centre-backs?

The club is on the verge of losing both Antonio Rudiger and Christensen for free if they do not reach an agreement with them soon. The Blues should sort out their contracts one by one without any further delay and make this a priority.

Moreover, Bayern has already met with Christensen’s agency in December. The two defenders are quite similar since both prefer to play as a right-sided centre-back. The Blues should be fine if they lose one of them, but should try to keep both. But losing both for free would just be bad business on their part.

Chelsea News: Andreas Christensen is demanding for a new contract in order to continue at Chelsea.

Chelsea defender Christensen made a new demand for a substantial wage package to prolong his contract at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have already lost Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi last summer, leaving problems in the central defence.

However, Christensen’s presence aided Thomas Tuchel in putting together a formidable defensive setup week after week.Last season, the Danish international was instrumental in our UEFA Champions League victory.

Chelsea’s star defender Andreas Christensen

Andreas Christensen, a tall, ball-playing centre-back, joined Chelsea’s Academy as a teenager. He has today progressed to become a valuable member of the senior side. Christensen spent eight years at Brondby before joining Chelsea ahead of a slew of other suitors. He got his first goal in the fourth round at the Valley against Charlton.

Christensen scored his first goal for the club during the 2021/22 Champions League group stage. In a 4-0 home win over Malmo, the Dane shifted his body effectively to volley in a cross from fellow centre-back Thiago Silva and open the scoring early.

He possesses composure on and off the ball, physical strength, aerial ability, and awareness in equal measures. This makes him an all-rounder who has shown himself to be an accomplished full-back and defensive midfielder.

Andreas Christensen is now regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League. When called upon, Christensen remains a dependable defender who continues to amaze. With 21 appearances in all competitions this season, the 25-year-old defender’s responsibilities have clearly grown.

Chelsea News: Christensen gathering interest from other clubs as well

The Blues, on the other hand, are still in danger of losing him in the summer if they cannot reach an agreement on a new contract. Christensen is garnering a lot of interest from Bayern Munich.

Is it possible for the Blues to reach an agreement with Andreas Christensen?

We cannot afford to lose two crucial central defenders in the same summer. Especially for free, given the contract standoff between Chelsea and Antonio Rudiger.

As a result, Chelsea should sort out their contracts one by one without any further delay.
