Nashville SC rising on the field, approaching GEODIS Park opening

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — At the start of the 2022 MLS season, Nashville SC’s eight-game road stint stretched 18,000 miles. Its self-proclaimed magic number of points in the Western Conference was eight. Six matches into the fray, Nashville has undersold itself on what was possible.
Nashville (3-2-1) reached 10 points in the West on Saturday, coming back from 1-0 down to serve Sporting Kansas City its first home loss, 2-1, since Nov. 7 at Children’s Mercy Park. Nashville has also gone to Seattle Sounders FC and Columbus Crew this season, two MLS Cup champions in recent years, and won, earning clean sheets in the process.
Back in early February in Tampa, Florida, coach Gary Smith said the expectation was for Nashville to end its eight-game road series in a playoff spot, a top-seven position. Two months later, that’s where Nashville is, sitting sixth. The success is a product of Smith galvanizing the squad to be pragmatic in defining and striving for success in the quarter of the season.
“That’s one thing I’ve really appreciated about Gary – a clear vision, the eight points, our goals we had for the first four games and our goals we had for the second four,” midfielder Sean Davis told The Tennessean after Nashville’s win over SKC. “I said when I first came here – the winning culture that’s already here, I wanted to be a part of that.”
Nashville is three weeks away from debuting its new soccer stadium, GEODIS Park. Meanwhile, it hasn’t played reserved or conservative against some of the most talented clubs in the league. Instead, putting a mid-March hiccup aside, Nashville has dared to play as if it has been playing at home all along: high-pressing the opposition, scoring early and deploying an all-out defense to secure the win.
Smith said throughout preseason under the south Florida sun how managing workload would be vital. He added that rotation would be key to combating fatigue. The likes of Jack Maher, Brian Anunga and Taylor Washington have contributed in goals during Nashville’s past two matches, making immediate payoffs.

Nashville has scored three of its six goals in the first 30 minutes of matches and its comeback against SKC was just its third all-time when trailing at the half. So do such wins change Nashville’s perspective on how it views the rest of the road trip?
“Not really, Smith said. “There was some boxes that we wanted to tick. The way we play and the confidence within a group was certainly one of them that we have to try and keep in a good place. Returning home and having a lot of home games, I think we’ve shown a good edge to our performances.
“But overall, the attitude and the way that we’ve compartmentalized each game, each challenge, each travel day, each travel weekend – whether they’re 2,3,4 days or whether they’re one hour, two hour time zones (changes) – it’s new to all of us, or most of us, but I think we’ve got a pretty good grip of where we’re at, what we need to do and how we take the good parts along to the next game and try to dismiss some of the difficulties that we’ve encountered.”

Nashville’s 2-0 loss against Dallas in March was an offensively listless performance and its fluke against Real Salt Lake meant consecutive losses building up to a 10-day international break. Two wins followed and it exceeding the eight-point objective, meaning Nashville is where it wants to be, right?
“If you ask me, ‘are where we want to be’, I would say no,” Smith said. “I think there’s more to come from the group…what we are seeing is a team that is gaining tremendous understanding, rhythm and confidence out of some really, really tough road games.”

PREVIEW | FC Cincinnati seek fifth-straight win, return home to host the New England Revolution

SCOUTING THE NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION (3-5-3, 11 POINTS, 11th EASTERN CONFERENCE)
FC Cincinnati will get a second crack at the defending MLS Supporters’ Shield holders, a rematch of the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 contest on Wednesday, May 11th in Foxborough, Massachusetts. On that day, the hosts came out on top, 5-1, the fourth-straight win by New England in the head-to-head series with FCC across all competitions.
The Orange and Blue saw on that evening first hand how dangerous New England’s top offensive threats (Carles Gil and Adam Buksa) can be. Gil secured a hat trick, and Buksa scored a brace to combine for all five New England goals. In MLS action this season, Buksa has scored in five consecutive games, the longest active streak in MLS.
Gil is one of the league’s craftiest midfielders. He led MLS last season in assists and creating chances, and he is right on the heels of the Orange and Blue’s Luciano Acosta this season in key passes and shot-creating actions.
The Orange and Blue did not have to face Matt Turner, one of the best goalkeepers in the league last Wednesday. The USMNT netminder returned from injury and made his season debut in late April, and has one clean sheet in three appearances this season. Turner is expected to join English Premier League side Arsenal in June, making Saturday perhaps the last time FCC will try to put shots past the 27-year-old standout.
The Revs are unbeaten in their last four games across all competitions. Bruce Arena’s squad are coming off a 2-2 tie last Sunday at Atlanta United FC.
