Match report: Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United have won their third round FA cup tie 1-0 against Aston Villa and will face Middlesbrough in the fourth round.

A much changed United side took on Steven Gerrard’s side at the Theatre of Dreams and Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t even make the bench as he nursed a hip injury. Jadon Sancho was also ruled out of the tie.

The first chance for United came from Scott McTominay as he latched on to a blocked shot from Rashford, striking it from outside the box but it was straight at the keeper.

It was the academy graduate who made the breakthrough in the eighth minute. Fred delivered the ball into the danger area as McTominay rose higher than the Villa defenders and headed it home.

Moments later, Villa had a chance at the other end as Lindelof tried to head a corner clear but instead put it into the path of Ollie Watkins who was arriving at the back post but he wasn’t anticipating it and bundled it wide.

Villa forced a good save from De Gea in the opening twenty minutes too as McGinn was given way too much time and space to get a shot away.

Cavani had a good chance as United counter attacked. Bruno Fernandes, leading the charge, waited for options before playing it to the Uruguayan, who forced a good save from Martinez.

It was Villa’s turn to counter as another mistake from Lindelof left the door open again for Watkins, who found the underside of the crossbar.

Moments later Villa had another chance which was deflected just wide of the goal.

The game seemed to come in waves and United had survived this Villa wave and it was their turn to attack.

Strong defending from Villa denied Fernandes before Shaw ran on to a ball from a long way out, striking it with power and Martinez pulled off a brilliant save to tip it over the bar.

Fernandes and Rashford were linking up well with some brilliant runs and passes but they just couldn’t capitalise on it.

United began the second half on the front foot, pressing well they forced a mistake from Villa which allowed Cavani and Fernandes to link up for an attack but the defence tracked back well and forced it out for a corner.

However, it wasn’t long before Villa found the back of the net from a free kick. With Cavani sprawled out in the penalty area, it was headed across the face of goal, flicked on by Watkins and received a final touch from Ings to find the back of the net.

A lengthy VAR check ensued, no one really sure whether it was a foul or offside that they were checking.

Eventually, referee Michael Oliver was called to the monitor and ruled that Ramsey blocked Cavani, and the goal was chalked off to huge cheers and sighs of relief from the home supporters.

Tensions were boiling over especially between McGinn and Fernandes and the Villa wave kept on coming. It felt like United were clinging on in the second half.

A couple of chances ensued for United as they grappled with the game. A tame shot from Greenwood was scooped up by Martinez before he later forced a save which Rashford could have tapped in but he stopped his run and began walking back before Villa had regained control of the ball.

United were crying out for fresh legs and Rangnick tried to sure things up by bringing Donny Van De Beek on. He also brought Lingard and Elanga on for a fresh attacking force.

Though they didn’t have much time to make an impact, Elanga and Lingard linked up well, the former making good runs and Lingard showing great skill and control as he danced round two defenders to keep an attack alive.

It was a scrappy win for the Reds but Ralf Rangnick and the fans will take it.

Team: de Gea, Lindelof, Rashford (Elanga 86), Greenwood, Fred, Fernandes (Lingard 85), Varane, Dalot, Cavani (Van De Beek 72), Shaw, McTominay

Manchester United News: Anthony Elanga signs a new contract until 2026

Swedish U21 player Anthony Elanga has extended his contract with Manchester United. Following the extension, Elanga will be employed at the club until 2026.

Anthony Elanga first joined Manchester United at the young age of 12. Since then, he has risen through the ranks at the club. Elanga has played for the club’s youth teams and he has also represented the United A-team on a few occasions.

After finalizing his extension, Elanga said that his ultimate ambition has always been to play for the Red Devils. Hence, he added that signing a contract extension at the club was an important moment for him.

Anthony Elanga added, “This is the perfect environment to take the next step. I learn from world-class players and coaches every day. Hence, I am overjoyed that the Club has shown such faith in my development.”

The left-winger has already made 3 appearances for the Red Devils this season. And as per his statement, Elanga can’t wait for more opportunities to continue his progress at Manchester United. The player concluded the press conference by thanking God, his family, and the club.

Owing to this, the player has been called up to be a part of the senior squad since the 2020/21 season. Anthony Elanga: All the latest updates on Manchester United prospect’s new contract – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United have confirmed Anthony Elanga has signed a new contract that will tie him down for the next four years at least.

Lots has unfolded since the announcement and here are some of the reactions to the news so far.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano not only confirmed the news but told fans exactly what they wanted to hear- that youngsters will be key to Ralf Rangnick’s project and that Elanga won’t be the only one to sign a new deal.

Romano tweeted: “Ralf Rangnick approved the decision to extend Anthony Elanga’s contract and he won’t be the only one. Youngsters will be key in his project. 🔴🤝 #MUFC

Elanga officially signed a new deal until June 2026, with the option to extend for a further year.”

Football director John Murtough was in high praise of Elanga and appeared to promise the player is going to have a key role in the future.

Utdreport tweeted: “John Murtough: “He [Elanga] is yet another fantastic example of the type of player that our world-leading youth development system continues to produce. We are thrilled that he has signed this new contract, & everyone is excited to see him grow over the coming seasons.” #mulive”

Elanga himself was obviously ecstatic with the news and had a mature outlook on it all, setting high targets for himself.

Utdreport: “Anthony Elanga: “My ultimate ambition has always been to play for #mufc. The standard is extremely high, but this contract is another important moment in my journey.” #mulive”

MUFCScoop: “Elanga Ig: “Jehovah is great 🙏🏽

With hard work and dedication comes opportunity at this special club. Time to push on💪🏾” #MUFC”

Perhaps the most interesting bit of news all day was Simon Stone confirming that Elanga will stay with the first-team and not leave on loan despite the interest.

Simon Stone: “The idea is for Elanga to remain at OT for the rest of the season. Loads of loan interest though.”

Some fans will likely be skeptical of Elanga remaining at the club for the season as they will want him to be wherever he can get the most minutes at.

With Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Edinson Cavani all ahead of him in the pecking order, let alone the other international stars, it’s difficult to imagine him getting enough game time.

Nonetheless, it’s good to see him commit his future and supporters will be excited to see him grow into the player they know he can be.

Youngsters could follow Kieran McKenna to Ipswich Town on loan – Man United News And Transfer News

A number of Manchester United youngsters could be set for loan moves in January according to the MEN.

Finalising his move into Ipswich Town’s managerial role quickly last week, Kieran McKenna has a tough task at hand to make up the 10 points Ipswich currently sit behind the play-off spots.

It is of no surprise that the former Manchester United first team coach and academy manager will turn to players he knows to come in and fight the challenge for promotion with him.

The MEN report that “Noam Emeran is just one of the players said to be on the newly-appointed Ipswich boss’ radar.” Other youngsters McKenna is said to be keen on are “Anthony Elanga, Teden Mengi, Dylan Levitt and Shola Shoretire.”

With mixed results in the loan market in recent years, Manchester United will be keen to use the connection with McKenna to get first team experience for players under a familiar and highly rated coach.

Similar loan arrangements have proved fruitful for Chelsea in the past to Frank Lampard’s Derby County, producing results which United will be eager to replicate.

Of those linked, Noam Emeran is a crafty winger who has been with Manchester United since February 2019 but has seen little of the pitch in that time due to injuries.

Having returned from injury earlier this month, Emeran picked up an assist in a cameo off the bench against Blackburn u23s. A loan move could be seen as a good route to catch up for lost time on the treatment table by being thrown into the deep end of senior football.

Looking at a more experienced option, Anthony Elanga, a wide forward with blistering pace has already made five appearances for United’s first team. A more optimistic target, Elanga is unlikely to make the move to the League One side as he has impressed Ralf Rangnick in his short time in Manchester.

Teden Mengi will be desperate for more senior football after his loan to Derby County last season and a guaranteed start spot in League One could be a realistic move for the centre-back to make. A move to Ipswich would also see Mengi reunite with George Edmundson, who he partnered him in the backline at Derby.

Welsh international Dylan Levitt may be another unrealistic target for McKenna with the classy midfielder already being on loan at Dundee United. Starting the season in fine form, Levitt spent all of November out with an injury but has been eyeing a return in recent weeks.

The last youngster linked to follow McKenna is the 17 year old gem of the United academy, Shola Shoretire. At such a young age it would be unusual for United to take the loan route, but with 35 appearances already at u23 level, the club may feel he is ready to take the next step and a familiar coach would offer the perfect environment.

Whichever youngsters it may ultimately be, moves look almost certain to happen in January to the benefit of both Ipswich Town and Manchester United.
