Antonio Conte surprised by incredible referee call against Chelsea

Published

Tottenham Hotspur News: Antonio Conte suffered his first defeat in the Premier League as a Spurs manager. Chelsea ran out 2-0 winners to bring an end to his 9 matches unbeaten streak.

The Blues scored twice in quick succession in the second half through Hakim Ziyech and Thiago Silva, to grab all 3 points. Conte was left frustrated with one of the referee’s decisions, as Harry Kane’s first-half goal was chalked off.

Kane seemed to have put his side ahead right before half-time, but Paul Tierney ruled it out. The referee deemed that Kane had fouled Thiago Silva in the buildup to the goal, for minimal contact on the part of the English striker.

The Italian manager did not understand the decision from the referee and questioned it after the match. He did not get how the goal was ruled out, especially in England, given the physical nature of the Premier League.

“In the first half the referee disallowed a goal, I was very clear with him in a polite way, but to see this type of goal disallowed in England was incredible,” Conte said. “Maybe in Italy, it was 50-50, but in England it was incredible.

The decision to chalk off the goal became a very big point of debate during the match. A goal for Spurs at that time could potentially have turned the tide of the match.

Several football pundits also seemed a bit bemused at how the goal was ruled out for a slight shove in the back on Thiago Silva. The decision also surprised Chelsea coach, Thomas Tuchel, who later on said that he thought the goal should have stood.

Antonio Conte was also critical of Paul Tierney’s decision to award Tanganga a yellow card in the first half. Tanganga received a booking for what looked like a soft challenge on Hudson Odoi, which seemingly meant he needed to tread with care for the rest of the match.

“What also hurt me a lot was the yellow card to (Japhet) Tanganga. It can seem a stupid thing but the yellow card changed the game for him. It also meant we had to substitute him. The referee tried to make the best decision. It could be good or bad.”

Despite the refereeing decisions, Chelsea were evidently the better team on the park and the difference in class between the two sides showed yet again. This was a third consecutive defeat for Tottenham Hotspur against Chelsea this month.

Although the good work seems to have started under Conte, he desperately needs signings in January. It is the only way they will become serious contenders for the Top-4 this season.

Tottenham Hotspur are currently seventh in the league with 36 points from 20 matches. Spurs remain 2 points behind Manchester United but have 2 games in hand. Antonio Conte now has a couple of weeks in hand as Spurs next take on Brighton on the 4th of February in the FA Cup.

The Argentina international has been in superb form since making the move, playing a key role as Spurs push for a place in the top-four. He has played 22 league games this season, scoring one goal.

Meanwhile, Dejan Kulusevski joined the London-based club on loan from Juventus during the January transfer window.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham are ready to spend £67.5 million to make Dejan Kulusevski and Christian Romero’s loan deals permanent in the summer.

The duo impressed Antonio Conte, who sees them as key members of the project for the present and future. Romero’s deal will cost Spurs £42.5 million, while Kulusevski has a buy-out clause of £25 million(as reported by the Daily Mail).

Arnaut Danjuma is now on the Spurs’ radar

According to reports, Spurs are looking to sign Villareal attacker Arnaut Danjuma during the upcoming summer transfer window. Fabio Paratici reportedly sent scouts to watch the attacker during Villareal’s UEFA Champions League semi-final clash against Liverpool last month.

The Dutch international has been a revelation since joining the Spanish side from Bournemouth at the start of the current season. He has scored 10 goals in 23 league appearances for the club so far.

The 25-year-old also scored six goals in 11 UEFA Champions League fixtures prior to Yellow’s elimination from the tournament.

However, the London-based club is likely to face competition from Liverpool, Manchester United, and Real Madrid, who have also shown interest in signing him. However, Villareal are likely to demand a transfer fee of close to £50 million to sell their prized assets.

What’s next?

Spurs are the favorites to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League. They are currently fourth in the league table, with 68 points from 37 games. Antonio Conte’s men will play Norwich City at Carrow Road during their last league game of the season.

The Gunners heading towards another disastrous ending!

Arsenal News: It seems as if Arsenal just cannot get a hold of their nerves when the season’s about to end. Mikel Arteta’s men were the favorites to secure the fourth position in the league couple of weeks back.

However, now the tables have turned and Arsenal no longer holds the matter in their own hands. 2 back to back defeats have derailed Arsenal’s advantage and now Tottenham is in the driving seat.

It was perhaps the beating at Spurs which led to this catastrophe for Arsenal. It was as if the team just didn’t show up. After the loss to Tottenham, both the games were must-win games for Arsenal.

Tottenham had already secured the victory against Burnley which meant that Arsenal had to do the same. However, the team didn’t look like they were playing for something. In fact, it was Newcastle who was dominant in the entire game.

Being 1-0 down with the season on the line, Mikel Arteta did what any manager would do. He threw in Martinelli, Lacazette, and Pepe to build some attacking pressure on Newcastle.

However, Arsenal wasn’t able to create even one lucrative goal-scoring opportunity. Mikel Arteta was feeling let down by his players because he knows that this team is capable of much better.

This was his statement as per Sporting News. “That I’m extremely disappointed, that Newcastle was 10 times better than us and fully deserved the match,” Arteta told his players, according to the manager himself.

“And the performance is just nowhere near the level that we have to play if we want to play in the Champions League.” It was an off night for Arsenal at a very crucial point in the season.

As of now, Tottenham holds the 2-point advantage. All Konte’s men have to do is not lose, even if the game ends in a draw Tottenham will still secure the 4th position on basis of their superior Goal Difference.

Arsenal will have to win and hope for a Spurs defeat. Although, considering the form Tottenham are in it’s highly unlikely they will lose to a relegated Norwich City. Most likely it will be another Europa League adventure for Arsenal.

There are talks of the competition taking in 4 more teams from different leagues. So the Arsenal being at 5th does stand a small chance. However, it would be stupid to attach real hope to that.

Mikel Arteta will need some changes to the roster before the next season starts. In games like this, you need a vocal leader in midfield. Someone who takes the ball and makes things happen. Arsenal is full of potential starlets but no one midfielder could be seen as a leader. That should be the priority for the Gunners heading into the future.

Arteta hits back at Conte after the Italian taunted the Spaniard

Arsenal News: Mikel Arteta has reacted angrily to Antonio Conte’s claim that he complains excessively ahead of Arsenal’s crucial match against Newcastle.

Following his team’s 3-0 loss to Tottenham in the North London derby on Thursday night, the Spaniard accused referee Paul Tierney of “killing” the game with his decisions, particularly the first-half dismissal of Rob Holding, which reduced Arsenal to ten men.

In a post-match interview, Arteta indicated that if he expressed his true feelings, he would be suspended for six months. Spurs boss Conte criticised Arteta as a result, stating, “I listen to him complain a lot.”

Now, Arteta has chosen to respond ahead of his team’s vital match on Monday night at St James’ Park.

Arsenal News: What did Arteta say?

The Spaniard was adamant: “In my three years here, I have tried to avoid making any complaints. On Thursday, I had no complaints. I merely replied that I couldn’t give a clear assessment of my feelings about the game. This brings us to the end of the discussion.”

“Whatever we do, we’ll do our utmost to defend the club, as we have in the past. The other night, I attempted it myself. That was not done with the goal of swaying anyone’s opinion.”

“However, I was being honest and forthright. It is my job and responsibility, I believe, to describe how the club feels when I speak on its behalf. If I can’t do it, I’d prefer not to.”

Spurs pushed over Burnley on Sunday, piling more pressure on Arsenal ahead of their clash with the nouveau riche Toon. Arteta is confident that his team will finish in the top four if they win today and again on Sunday against Everton.

Champions League qualification is a must, Arteta

“We want to be playing in the Champions League,” Arteta said. That’s all there is to it ” We’ve gone so far, and now it’s in our hands. We want to take advantage of it, as well as the excitement and opportunity that it brings, and we’ll want to go for it.”

Despite letting players like former club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and defenders Pablo Mari and Callum Chambers leave, he believes he does not regret adding to his roster during the January transfer window.

Arteta on no signings in January

We’ve come so far with this bunch of players,” Arteta added. There were and still are decisions to be made. And it wasn’t just about the club or myself; it was also about the players in those positions and how they planned to contribute to the squad.

We attempted to do things correctly. Then, of course, we’ve had some bad luck with long-term injuries, which has made the situation considerably tougher.”
