Antonio Conte seems unhappy despite righting Spurs ship

Published

on

Many wondered how long it would be before Antonio Conte would begin making noises of discontent during his press conferences at Spurs. As it turns out, it would only be a few months. Indeed, based on historical precedent, however positive the start of a relationship is between Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy and whoever he puts in charge, the novelty begins to fade rather quickly. Now, you wouldn’t say the Spurs hot seat is cursed, but it’s becoming increasingly evident that working under Levy brings with it its own frustrations.

You only need to look at what happened with Mauricio Pochettino, current PSG manager, to understand that every relationship under Levy has a sell-by date. Over Pochettino’s five years at Spurs, it was widely known that Pochettino and Levy were good friends before Spurs sacked him.

In this instance, it’s important to note that the Argentinian is a very astute manager, he is after all in charge of a PSG team that is currently priced at 23/2 as the fifth-favourites in the latest UEFA Champions League odds from Betfair.

If you look up the recent Champions League bets predictions, you’ll see the experts are hardly ruling out Pochettino’s side winning Europe’s greatest club showpiece.

As briefly touched on, this is an important factor to consider when assessing the merits of his Spurs dismissal and ultimately what went wrong. As we can see, the 49-year-old knows how to compete at the business end of the European competition, but he lost the desire to manage Spurs after Levy refused to help him build a new team after the 2019 Champions League final loss to Liverpool. Needless to say, losing that hunger at Spurs saw results tumble and eventually resulted in his sacking.

Even Levy would even agree today that not opening the purse strings for Pochettino was a mistake after the miracles he performed at White Hart Lane. This is why Conte’s annoyance and a subsequent warning shot across the bow to Levy in the form of the Italian telling a room of journalists that he prefers to live in the moment and not talk about his Spurs future, was peculiar as you would have reasoned that by now Levy had learned some kind of lesson after the Pochettino saga.

Furthermore, a quick look at the Premier League table suggests that Conte has righted the Spurs ship and has them well lined up to qualify for the Champions League next season. This would be an achievement that would bring a huge amount of breathing room to Tottenham Hotspur and a much-needed financial injection. So you go back to Conte’s apparent irritation with life at White Hart Lane and wonder what Daniel Levy could be doing to ease his concerns, given that Tottenham are seemingly on the way back to mixing it with Europe’s elite with Conte at the helm.

It’s an odd situation and one that desperately needs some light shone on it but regrettably, logic will tell you that if Conte is already feeling aggrieved after only two months under Levy, then it is ultimately not a relationship that is predicted to last.

Raphinha-Barcelona-Transfer-Request

Raphinha has expressed his intention to join FC Barcelona during the summer transfer window, according to Spanish daily SPORT. After guaranteeing the Peacocks’ Premier League position, the Brazilian international has requested a transfer to Camp Nou from Leeds United.

The Brazilian has made great strides since joining Leeds United from Stade Rennais in October 2020. After two seasons with the Peacocks, the 25-year-old has established himself as the club’s talisman and one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attackers.

The 25-year-old was the guiding light for Leeds as they avoided relegation in the 2021/22 season, scoring 11 goals and providing three assists in 35 Premier League outings. Raphinha is eager to join Barcelona after helping Leeds stay in the Premier League this season.

Xavi has made him one of Barcelona’s top targets for the summer transfer season and is eager to bring the player to Spain. Barcelona’s interest in the player makes sense, given that Ousmane Dembele’s future at Camp Nou is uncertain due to prolonged contract negotiations. He is a feasible option for Barcelona even if Dembele remains at Camp Nou, as the Blaugrana are unlikely to sign Adama Traore on a permanent basis and the Brazilian is eager to join Barcelona during the summer transfer window.

Leeds United, on the other hand, recently rejected the Catalan giants’ bid to acquire their talisman. Raphinha, on the other hand, is adamant about moving to Camp Nou and has encouraged the West Yorkshire club to allow him his desired transfer.

It is uncertain how Leeds would react, but allowing Raphinha to join Barcelona will most certainly help them earn finances for their summer business. At the same time, rather than engaging in a bitter war, the two sides will part ways on favourable terms. The player has contributed to Leeds’ Premier League survival and handing him the move to Barcelona will be done in good faith.

Diego-Llorente-called-up-Spain

Leeds United had to dig deep to secure their Premier League status, and despite their season round abstruse defensive problems at Elland Road – one man stood out time and time again, be it putting in those last grace tackles or getting those crucial touches from a dead ball – Diego Llorente was at it to close down the season on a high.

His performances are rewarded by a call-up for Spain for their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Portugal followed by Czech Republic next month.

Manchester City’s French-born defender Aymeric Laporte was initially called up by La Roja manager Luis Enrique although he was forced to withdraw from the squad with an injury and Diego Llorente was called up to take up his place in the squad next month.

Selección Española de Fútbol’s official website on Wednesday confirmed Enrique’s decision to call Diego up, who will join his national teammates for training at the Ciudad del Fútbol on May 30th.

Diego Llorente was among the names called up by Luis Enrique for the European championship last summer – although he finished the summer without making an appearance and then he wasn’t looked at for the majority of the last year.

Now, Llorente finally has his chance to make his place in Enrique’s long term plans, especially with World Cup right around the corner.
